Secret Spell, winner of Wednesday night’s Group 3 Puppy Classic at Cranbourne in just her seventh career start, could be on the pathway to emulating the legendary Kantarn Bale.
Trainer Kelly Bravo indicated that she is contemplating setting the inexperienced youngster for next month’s $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park, a race won by Kantarn Bale in 1999 in just his ninth career start.
“I’ll be having a chat to (owner) Paul (Westerveld) and see what he thinks about entering her in a Prelude of the Melbourne Cup over the next couple of weeks, which would ensure her a start in the Melbourne Cup heats should we decide to nominate her for that event,” said Bravo, of Lovely Banks.
“It’s not like she’ll know who she’s up against if we put her in the Melbourne Cup. She’ll just go out and do her thing.”
“She’s only had seven starts (for six wins), but she has already won the GRV Vic Breeders Maiden series at The Meadows and now the Puppy Classic at Cranbourne, so she is doing everything we ask of her.”
“Last night she pinged the lids and I thought Dewana Result might run her down, but she kicked away at the end which surprised me, and her winning time (29.708sec) was extra impressive given that no other greyhound broke 30 seconds on the night.”
Secret Spell collected a $25,000 first prize in the Puppy Classic when she eventually defeated Hostile (Darren Beasley) by three lengths with Dewana Result (Brendan Dewan) third.
Secret Spell is currently 21 months of age, the same age Kantarn Bale was when he won the Melbourne Cup.
