Wednesday night’s heats of the age-restricted Group 3 Cranbourne Puppy Classic (520m) are sure to attract plenty of interest from punters given the quality of greyhounds going around.
While the Trifecta in the 2014 final boasted talented trio Secret Spell, Hostile and Dewana Result, the depth of this year’s heats are far superior.
The intriguing battles begin in the first heat with Blazin’ Bomber likely to start favourite in a field that also boasts Australian Cup finalist Emrys, while later on in the evening the oustanding Dyna Double One is set for a fascinating contest with star Queenslander Pop The Cork.
Other big names in the heats include What’s Chewing, Angie Rocks, Dawkins Bale, Weston East and Shared Equity, to name just a few.
Kelly Bravo, trainer of 2014 winner Secret Spell, said there is a noticeable increase in the depth of quality in 2015.
“Last year there was one or two standout dogs in every heat, but this year it’s more like three or four, and I’ll just be rapt to get one greyhound through to the final.”
“Kayda Shae (pictured with Bravo) is definitely our best chance. His three runs since returning from injury have probably been the toughest three races of his life, but he did really well against Fernando Bale recently (Replay) so that gives us plenty of confidence.”
“What’s Chewing is our other serious contender. He can be hit or miss at the start but with a bit of luck early he’ll be in with a chance,” said the trainer from Lovely Banks.
Wednesday’s eight heat winners are set to go through to the $25,000 to-the-winner final on 28 August.
